Dial 'F" for festivals

I am talking about post-Navratri depression. For nine days the city wears a magical festive look and resounds with the tumultuous fervour of celebration. The ever-increasing hype and commercialization of "garbas" adds more than a fair share of glam quotient to the festivities and the nine-day-long festival is stuporously ensconced in a suspension of disbelief. Till the tenth day when it is time for Goddess Durga to take her leave. As soon as the deity leaves the pandal , it is as if Cinderella's spell is broken ! It suddenly seems so bereft, so forlorn, so deafeningly silent. And the workmen almost callously pull down the burlap and bamboo, the plywood and the plaster, all of which till yesterday had created a fantasy world of magnificent castles or the awesome Himalayas or yes, even Paradise. Reality hits hard and we are back on terra firma. The feeling is indescribably depressing. Life suddenly seems empty without the frenzy to reach the pandals , bedecked in new clothes and then jostle with the crowd to get a ringside view of the Goddess and the puja activities, savour the divine prasad and absorb the frenetic goings-on.

But then, we are human and therefore we are resilient. We not only immerse ourselves in our daily grind but soon enough, we are ready to pour our heart and soul into the next festival. After all, our nation thrives on festivals and it is the religious fervour which at once binds us together or drives a wedge between us. Religiosity is a potent factor and is used and abused by diabolical politicians to serve their vested interests.

Navratri is gone but Eid is round the corner and will be followed by Diwali and Christmas. The crackers and fireworks will be louder than the terrorist blasts which keep rocking the nation from time to time because we will be sending out the message that violent extremists may scar our bodies, our minds and even our souls, but never will they be able to scar our spirit ! We may be intensely hurt but we will rise like a Phoenix from the ashes and cock a snook at terrorists and celebrate life once again.

After all, festivals are our safety valves against life's pressures; they make living worthwhile. That is the great thing about festivals.
