Its delicate and fragile having adorned us since birth. It comes in myriad colors and there's one for each occasion.  It wouldn't escape, but you still confine it. Chances are, at this very instant it's loosing its luster in some corner of your room. It's a rare breed  giving us an entire sensory experience. It soothes the eye, strangely invigorating us through our nose, we dare not exert force for fear of quashing its fragile existence. It s an instant mood alterer and doesn't yet fear extinction.

The humble flower is back in our midst. But had it really been kept on the back burner of our 'bestowal gift'?

The busiest gent today is your local florist what with him having to deal with innumerable requests by the hour to let his 'merchandise' accompany us on our soirees. Florists are raking it in as we again, turn towards the humble flower and its power to please. Floral bouquets are back as the most prized carry along companion, the true arm candy, the modern day swords.  Our weapon to win over  people through emotion, reason, wit, and intellect.   Our gift giving culture garbing in our 'pret-a- porter' generosity takes us to the depths of our resources( money) and imagination in buying the right gift. As oft' said 'A gift is nothing but yourself wrapped in a piece of paper'.  Fancy clothes, coffee table books, shimmering jewellery, shoes, bags, household articlesare the potpourri we seek, to look good, rich and philanthropic when buying a gift.

In this august list of hi end gifts the humble flower bouquet was right at the bottom decaying in its valley mist. Floral bouquets were great after thoughts when we sought to acquire the perfect largesse.

' Sadly, when there is nothing there is always the bouquet.' Through sheer tenacity, a rich history, and quiet charm- the floral bouquets have moved from last minute acquisitions,  to a preplanned much thought after procurement. Like acquired taste, the flower bouquet has risen to the top on our gift menu. Why? Probably it stands out for its natural ness amidst the synthetic surround, it's us in direct tune with nature and for its indefatigable quiet charm. We humans like quiet unobtrusive objects which complement our sense of self.

Flowers erase class systems. Any one can buy a flower. Now floral bouquets are all around. The Wealthiest, the poorest- all  carrying flowers, to be counted.  It's a field day for the flower family- tulips, chrysanthemums, daises, sunflowers, Hyacinths, violets and mogra's  -all  being  wooed  to grace us for a few hours. The rose of course, being the legend, continues to enjoy our unwavering patronage.

The true potent symbol of love is still a red rose. How many times has a single red rose  rescued us from matters of heart and hearth? The history of any romance could well have been written with its stem.

Why do we give flowers as gifts? I guess it's the lack of timelessness inherent in its delicate nature. The thought that these flowers will fade away in a short span , makes it imperative to live the moment to its maximum. Perhaps hidden away in our psyche is the parallel with our lives. The life of these flowers Terminal, finite, just like ours but even then why shy away from giving someone a state of heightened contentment? So heaps of flowers everywhere this festive season.

The god's, the dead and us have a common link! Flowers are the new power brokers in town. For once, lets wake up and smell the flowers!
