In the run up to the general elections, 2009 LK Advani toured the length and breadth of the Country. He harped on twin issues- "hang Afzal Guru" and that prime minister Dr Manmohan Singh was a 'nikamma' owing to all his supposed failures. The electorate provided an appropriate reply to Advani's plea to provide him a mandate - they re-elected Dr Manmohan Singh as PM by increasing the Congress tally from 145 to 206.
Narendra Bhai Modi, in his much awaited address at the BJP National Council did something similar to Mr Advani- he compared the Congress to 'termites' and the PM to a 'night watchman.' Narendra Bhai Modi was however a little out of character in his description of the Congress and its leadership - in the past, he has referred to the Congress as an 'old hag'. Modi had also said that "nobody remembered the PM when he was on holiday for two months. Such an invisible PM who is not to be found and seen anywhere!" This remark was an apparent reference to PM's absence from work while recovering from bypass heart surgery in January, 2009. Both Congress President Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi have been addressed by Mr. Modi with the choicest abuses in the past.
King Rama is the BJP's ideal- it has set out to establish Ram Rajya on earth.
The Ramayana describes the exemplary characteristics of Rama- the ideal king in this manner "He was always tranquil at heart and his speech was gentle, he never spoke haughtily to (and of) any man under any circumstances. He was intelligent, sweetly spoken, and would always speak first thus allaying others' nervousness. He was agreeable and valorous, but was not proud of his heroism. He utterly rejected things mundane, and would never speak harshly. He was alert and infallible. He was free from spite, having subdued anger, and he was neither haughty nor envious. He was aloof from the material world. He was compassionate, and mild. He pitied the unfortunate, was conversant with the principles of religion, was always kind, and was purity personified. He was often delighted by some small service rendered Him, and being self-possessed, He would forgive hundreds of misdeeds."
A persisting image is of Narendra Modi being driven to take oath in 2007 with him in the front of the jeep and BJP patriarch LK Advani along with the then BJP President Rajnath Singh occupying the rear portion, standing like his subordinates. It was LK Advani who had hand picked Narendra Modi to officiate as chief minister of Gujarat in October, 2001. It is a similar complaint that several senior leaders of his party have against Modi- his imperiousness and lack of grace.
Ramachandra Guha had said of him "the real reason that Narendra Modi is unfit to be Prime Minister of India is that he is instinctively and aggressively authoritarian." He claims that "He has a chappan inch chaati—a fifty-six-inch chest, and therefore all other men (if not women) in Gujarat must bow down to his power and his authority."
Ravana is described by the Ramayana as being "aggressive and arrogant in nature although he was also an exemplary scholar."
While targeting the Gandhi family, he is reported to have stated that "Sacrificing the national interest for the interest of one family is the tradition of the Congress." His own party, the BJP is but a front for the Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh whose principle is "selfless service for nation" "to defend India against Muslim separatism". The RSS is an unregistered organization with no known list of members. The members of the Gandhi family contest general elections with regularity and are accountable to their electorate, as well as to the people of India. The RSS is accountable to none.
Narendra Modi had exhorted his party men to launch a second independence struggle against the Congress government. For the sake of accuracy, he ought to have stated that they ought to participate in the 'first' war of independence. History does not bear out the participation of any member of the RSS in the freedom struggle- actually it did of one of them - Vinayak Damodar Savarkar. Union Home Minister Vallabhbhai Patel wrote to prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru on February 27, 1948 in which he said "I have kept myself almost in daily touch with the progress of the investigation regarding Bapu's assassination case." It was a fanatical wing of the Hindu Mahasabha directly under (Vinayak Damodar) Savarkar that "[hatched] the conspiracy and saw it through".
The Congress party for its part exemplifies what has been stated by Barrack Obama in his acceptance speech in 2008: "What you won't hear from this campaign or this party is the kind of politics that uses religion as a wedge and patriotism as a bludgeon."
