Do you really think the Nirbhaya gang-rape incident in Delhi in December 2012, which, as the world press put it, shook the collective conscience of the people of this country, made an impact on the insensitivity of this nation? If you think so, you are wrong.
We are not just bad, but, as sensitivity and responsibility go, we are perhaps on a downward spiral that is scary, sad and infuriating at the same time.
I am sharing below the experience of a vice-principal of a school in Delhi yesterday. She shared this with her friends on the social media. Read it and you'd not just be shocked at the way the general population reacts when they see someone in distress, or hurt in an accident, but worse, you would be forced to wonder what is happening to our youth. As she, an academic points out, "all young educated people I came across were... not able to behave like citizens .... I think we are imparting meaningless education or what.,.!!!!!!!!!!"
The good news is that the young man who was caught in the accident and would have probably bled to death under his bike with a large bunch of bystanders who perhaps were watching a reality show on TV, is recovering at the hospital.
We should be grateful we have citizens like Ranjana Joshi. This timely help saved a life. It could be someone related to us, a friend. Why are we so insensitive? Surely, it can't be the fear of police or repeated trips to the police station. The nation's Supreme Court has clearly ordered that the injured be treated immediately and the person who helps shouldn't be harassed.
All these candlelight marches and protests at Jantar Mantar etc., are meaningless when we can't walk the talk when the need arises.
Here is Ranjana's description of what happened, in her own words:
Today was a strange day. On my way to school we were able to take a serious accident case to AIIMS emergency. A young boy of about 28 years. My husband was going to drop me to school. Near about Ghitorni we saw a motorcycle in the middle of the road. We moved ahead. Suddenly in the rear view mirror we saw a body. By then we had to go way ahead take a u turn and come back. It was like something was making us go back. We reached the spot again. There we saw young people surrounding this boy lying under his motorcycle barely visible, staring at him without stepping forward to lift him. I was aghast at the lack of sensitivity of the people, the boy lay motionless in a pool of blood. I shouted for help, then 1 boy came forward and helped the body. I said put him in the car hurry hurry. I was frantic. It was a young life. I asked at least 1 person to sit with the poor boy at the back. I was sure somebody had got in because I was trying to figure out a hospital/ people on my phone. I told my hubby lets go and then when I turned nobody had got in. I requested people to sit in with him at the back but nobody came forward. My hubby said "no point, lets move." I was trembling by then because the boy was motionless. I was on the lookout for a PCR but none was in sight. We had to then take a call on the hospital. Seeing his condition, we felt we need to take him to either AIIMS or Safdarjung. I was shouting and getting the way cleared so that we could get the poor boy timely help and I was just praying so hard. Then at IIT we found a constable. He was the only light this bleak morning. He sat in the car after a little hesitation. I asked him to check for the phone in the boys pocket. He managed to take it out from the limp body. Just then the boy shuddered and vomited. There was life!
I asked Adesh to move faster. At last we reached Emergency AIIMS. There again shouted at attendants to help put the boy on a stretcher. Again with difficulty. I rushed him in the theatre and rushed to the doctor on duty to help, had him shifted to trauma. This long narration to share ….all young educated people I came across were… not able to behave like citizens ... I think we are imparting meaningless education or what..!!!!!!!!!!
I have just got the news that the boy is alive and he will see the sun shining again tomo morning with his young wife....I hope we all rise to the occasion whenever it happens . I am proud and happy to be married to a man who had faith in me and himself.
