The grass was neatly manicured. Rabbits, like white balls of wool, scurried to and fro occasionally pausing to nimble on the grass. They seemed so busy that they did not pause to look when humans walked close by. I was standing on the balcony of my room on a tree at the Tree House Resort, in the outskirts of Jaipur.
It was quite by accident I was discovered this place while surfing the net. It instantly caught my fancy. Many years back, my friend and I had decided to build a tree house. We were successful but it had a minor flaw. We both had to sit simultaneously at either end of the floor board to counterbalance each other. My first arboreal venture was fraught with danger, however several decades later I finally got to stay in a tree-house- as firm as a rock of Gibraltar and as comfortable and spacious as any luxe hotel with all the modern appurtenances.
As I looked out from my balcony, I could only see the tree tops and the tree houses around me. The resort was about 3 acres in area with a thick cluster of trees, creating a chiaroscuro effect on the ground. It did not seem that I was in Rajasthan. I looked down across the lawn. I could see my see my son stalking a rabbit. He was a fan of Jim Corbett! It was easy to catch the rabbits. You just had to be a little nimble on your feet.
The rooms had attached bathrooms. Once inside the rooms you just could not make out whether you were in a tree house or in a luxury hotel save for the fact that you would have a big branch going right through your room and your bathroom! How do you reach your room? Fortunately you do not need to climb the tree! There is easy flight of wooden steps leading to the balcony of your room.
The resort was about 20 km before Jaipur. As you turn left and head away from NH8, the topography of the land immediately changes. The narrow road twists and turns over small hillocks. In between the jagged landscape dramatically gives way to sand dunes.
The abundance of trees at the resort attracts a variety of birds at all times of the day. Every night an owl would come and sit on the same tree and like the lord mayor survey the landscape and its occupants. As we walked passed it, its gaze would follow us, turning its neck almost 180 degrees. In the serene wilderness, a pair of eyes observing us, in the dead of night, was a trifle disconcerting. It reminded me of the little girl possessed by the devil, in that psychological horror movie, The Exorcist!
At ground level, along with rabbits were ducks strutting about imperiously. In the shaded portion of the lawn was a rockery with a small pond. It was a home for several giant sized frogs with bulbous eyes intently staring into space. It would sit very still, pretending that I had not seen them. No sooner when I approached a little closer to establish a more cordial relationship with them, than they would, belying their phlegmatic appearance, dive into the deepest recess of the pond, with all the sprightliness of a fish.
There is a mini bar nestled among the Bamboo shoots and trees for those bent on their daily rendezvous with Bacchus. The resort caters to the athletic and non-athletic occupants. For the athletics there is a badminton and tennis court, a mini golf course and a small swimming pool. For the non-athletic types there are a variety of indoor games. The dining room is on a small hillock overlooking the resort.
The resort was an interesting and a unique concept. It was not too far from the city yet segregated enough for you to enjoy the quietude of a remote place. It was isolated enough to give the impression of being in the wilderness.
When you come away the picture that you take with you is that of dappled leaves swaying gently in the breeze as you look out from the window of your room; the occasional muffled sound of people; the sudden excited chattering of the birds and the solitary owl perched in a sentinel pose on the tree!
