Chess and boxing are poles apart when it come to the buildup of the big battle. Its dissimilarities were displayed in emphatic fashion when V Anand and Magnus Carlsen attended a joint media conference.

After the weigh-in of their title bouts, the boxers see eye-to-eye and have a go at each other in full media glare. The bad words are exchanged, stares are stage-managed and at times, even a fight breaks out.

Chess, in some ways, is sophisticated boxing. The players don't don't go the ballistic but their pieces could. The pieces' oneupmanship is always around the corner.

Anand and Carlsen avoided to look each other for the large part of their coming together on Thursday. They tried their best to conceal their feelings. The explosive uppercuts (sequence of moves) are reserved to be used over the board and the left hook (novelties) are kept under wraps.

The Indian is trying to treat this match  as a special occasion. He is trying to approach this match as logically as possible. On the other hand, Carlsen is trying to give an impression that he treats it as any other match and quite confident to seal the deal.

Boxers seem to get some pleasure when the opponent bleeds. In chess too, there is bleeding. But it's only internal. The heart bleeds, brain shivers and the breathing pattern goes haywire when you are in the middle of a tense battle.

And in time pressure, the countdown of a chess clock can remind a player of referees' countdown. Is chess mental boxing? And, boxing physical chess?

However hard I may try to find similarities between boxing and chess, one dissimilarity defines the difference between these sports and its universal appeal -- in boxing, no bout ends in a draw!
