Let’s spin the wheel…

Taking a leaf from Gandhi's philosophy, a friend had organized a spinning event on his birth anniversary. There was nothing novel about it since a number of such events were lined up in the city on that day. But what caught my attention was the appeal to youth to spin the spindle and have an experience in meditation while spinning.

Meditation, as we all know, is a way to let go of our stress and everything that we bottle up inside us. It is the path to knowing you, becoming one with that being. Why do we then hoard all the garbage that today's chaotic life showers us with and realize its repercussions only when we are on the brink? Is it that difficult to get hold on ourselves?

Probably not, if we learn to just be. Spinning does just that – negates the negativity and helps clear one's vision. Ask those who spin charkha – they do it as a form of puja, to replenish exhausted souls, because it has become a habit over the years or just to relax.

Gandhi took to spinning to free his people from the foreign rule and the rigid caste system, but he soon realized its meditative effects. He was so taken by it that he also mentioned it in his interpretation of Bhagvad Gita…"If one has to establish communion with God through some means, why not through the spinning wheel?"

Following in his footsteps is textile designer Rajan Chaudhary, who has been spinning for three decades. It has now become a habit and he spins even while watching TV. He has one charkha at home and another one at his workshop. Spinning is a creative outlet for him, something that gives him immense joy, says his daughter Malavi. A textile designer herself, she sits at the wheel as it builds a rhythm and "you just go with the flow".

In Gandhian Narayan Desai's family, his doctor daughter and archaeologist granddaughter spin whenever they find time from their busy schedule to simply unwind. The Gandhi kathakar himself is so enamoured with the charkha that he coined the word 'charkhopchar', as he believes that spinning cures all ailments. He recovers very fast after spinning and is mentally at peace, says his daughter.

While researching on charkha as a meditative tool, I came across some interesting posts in which people have talked about how they turn to the spindle for guidance and mental peace. Something Gandhi would have wanted his people to do – "Take to spinning (to find peace of mind). The music of the wheel will be as balm to your soul. I believe that the yarn we spin is capable of mending the broken warp and woof of our life."

As theologist Eliza Drummond sums up "spinning combines head and heart, emotion and intellect into a living faith". She often turns to spindle to replenish her energy. "And I am not alone. Women and men all over North America sit daily at their wheels, spending time, as Gandhi would have wished, in quiet contemplation," she says.

So, let's spin charkha and let go...
