Our modern-day lovers Krish and Ananya have no hang up about sex, early on in the relationship. Their actions, decisions don't seem contrived. There are no forced emotions, melodramatic tantrums. Things fall uncomplicated-ly into place. Teething issues, whatever little, are ironed out quickly and endearingly (Alia shines in that scene, suppressing emotions while trying to palate the not-so-perfectly timed proposal). Bugaboo begins with the 'M' word and with both parents playing spoilsport, 'marriage' seems a distant dream for our 'Punjabi-Madrasi' couple.

Spanning their breezy love story, and attempts thereafter to woo each other's families, 2 States keeps you entertained throughout. Our spaniel-eyed lover boy Arjun Kapoor charms with his restrained act but gets dwarfed by the mighty talented Alia Bhatt. The film, however, belongs as much to the leads as to the supporting cast - the Malhotras (Ronit Roy and Amrita Singh) and the Swaminathans (Revathy and Shiv Kumar Subramaniam). Solid ensemble! Ronit Roy brings effortless intensity to what may seem like a garden-variety role. S.K. Subramaniam is such a fine actor. Wish we'd see him more often. Amrita Singh, as the typical Punjabi mother breathes life into the film. 2 States packs its share of cliched North-South jokes and some over-the-top drama, but that doesn't take away from a film that has way too many moments, of love, humor, wit, emotion which make it memorable and rewatchable for me. The light, cheery first half is as consuming as the emotionally satiating second half.

Musically, it's one of the better albums of 2014. Where words fall short, music makes up for it. What a fine fusion of North meets South! I loved Revathy's little medley, which included a remixed version of one of her very popular numbers from the 90s. The wedding song-and-dance extravaganza looked blatantly out of place for the contemporary tone of the film. It easily belonged in a Karan Johar film.

Titbit - Shahrukh and Asin Thottumkal were earlier to play the leads. Ranbir Kapoor and Saif Ali Khan were also approached to play the male lead. Wonder what it would be like for Saif to have his ex-wife play his onscreen mother!
