#Uttarakhand? Sorry, not happening

We are living in an age where social media is the front line of disaster response. Social media is becoming the best way to spread information during dangerous events: phone lines can get congested, so social networks can be the ideal way to communicate - fast.

In the US, 76% of those affected in the last year used social media to contact friends and family; 37% used social media to help find shelter and supplies; and 24% used social media to let loved ones know they're safe. (Source: Mashable)

What about developing countries, you said? Well, in Chile, during the earthquake three years ago, Twitter hashtags like #quake and #terremotochile were created to compile news from users about the earthquake, and tags such as #buscapersonas were used to search for missing people.

With 14 hours of the recent earthquake in Sichuan, China, Sina Weibo (the Chinese twitter equivalent) users had sent three million messages helping people in search of families. Victims also directed rescue workers to the exact sites where they were trapped with mobile phone text messages. (Source: Xinhua)

Is #uttarakhand, #kedarnath, etc. being used closer to home? Unfortunately, no. It's being used to debate whether the floods were manmade or heavenmade.

As someone put it, 'James Gandolfini is trending over #Uttarakhand , #U'khand , #Kedarnath and #Yamuna. Which shows how disconnected the Twitterati are from ground reality.' (Sunil Shibad)

And about the Uttarakhand Tourism Board, the less said, the better - as you can see from the screen grab of their Twitter page, they have posted two tweets so far, many moons ago.
