Friday the 13th marks the momentary end of reason, a brief moment when evil triumphs, not in small part, but completely. Though the forces of good will eventually rally around to defeat evil, still Friday the 13th marks the day when innocence was nailed to the cross wearing a crown of thorns and it seemed that all good had come to an end.
The BJP is set to announce Narendra Modi as the PM candidate of the party ignoring the warning message of its patriarch LK Advani. Mr Advani has decried the move along with MM Joshi and Sushma Swaraj.
LK Advani had famously been the charioteer of the Ram Rathyatra in the early 90's. He was single-handedly responsible for communalizing the nation, providing respectability to Hindutva and for coining the term 'pseudo-secular'. The aftermath of the Rathyatra witnessed the destruction of the Babri-Masjid and the rise of Muslim terror.
Muslim terror did not exist in India before the destruction of the Babri-Masjid. Muslim terror was born the day the Masjid was destroyed by hand-held implements of Kar Sevaks egged on by Lal Krishna Advani. The Masjid's obliteration spawned a number of reprisals by fundamentalist Muslims beginning with the Mumbai Blasts of 1993 and India lost forever its tag of peacefulness, with foreign nation's providing advisories to its citizens regarding the dangers of travelling in India. Such advisories previously only related to impending heath hazards in the sub-continent. The 'Hindu resurgence' into which Mr Advani breathed monstrosity into a religion known for its passivity- the 'Hindu with a Trishul' was born to combat perceived attacks on India's majority religion.
India had been ruled by the Muslims for nearly 700 years and for 200 years by the British who were Christian. If both these religions had caused an assault on Hinduism as a religion, which is the basic premise of the resurgent Hindutvavadi's, would Hinduism still account for 80% of the Indian population?! Or would about 65% of the population be Hindu if both the populations of Pakistan and Bangladesh were added to that of 'Bhavyabharat'? The fact that the Hindu religion has never been under threat even at the hands of the most fundamentalist of all Muslim rulers completely eludes the mind of both the inciter of communal hatred and that of the incited. Instead similar to the animal like Taliban who destroyed the Bamiyan Buddhas in 2001, the Hindu fundamentalists commandeered by LK Advani laid waste the Babri Masjid and changed forever the profile of India.
When Advani speaks through Sudheendra Kulkarni by saying, "A socially polarising leader has polarised his own party. Can he run a smooth, stable and effective government at the Centre? Think seriously!" as reported in the Times of India, he speaks through experience. Advani is after-all a thinking leader and a leader who prefers the company of books to suffering fools as politicians usually do. His speeches are peppered by intellectual thought and coining phrases is child's play for him.
It is this thinking ability that veered him from extreme right in the early 90's to appreciating the thoughts of Pakistan's founder Mohammed Ali Jinnah in June 2005. His own painful experience of being compelled to make way for a moderate Atal Behari Vajpayee as the Prime Ministerial choice in 1998, and that of dealing with allies who embody the Indian people's desire to have a moderate as Prime Minister as opposed to a hawk have obviously had a profound impact on Mr Advani.
Added to this, Mr. Vajpayee's own words from Shimla in June 2004 squarely blaming the non-removal of Modi as Chief Minister of Gujarat after the riots in 2002 as being the single most important reason for the debacle of the NDA in 2004, is perhaps what weighed on Mr Advani's mind.
DG Vanzara's extra judicial, self-inculpatory confession of a few weeks ago has opened the imminent possibility of the arrest of a probable Prime Minister of India. The fact that after Vanzara's arrest in 2007, no encounter killings have ever taken place in Gujarat of any LET operatives alone absolves nearly all 17 persons brutally killed by the Gujarat Police under one pretext or another. The cover-up operations in the matter of Tulsiram Prajapati which have recently come to light and the fact that the bodies of those killed in Godhra were not handed over to the next of kin, but to the Bajrang Dal and VHP Cadre by the Gujarat Government, who then took these bodies around in procession in the streets to incite the mobs. The administration too was strictly instructed to remain 'immobilized' for a specified three day period of time when the 'final solution' would be over. This matter too is being argued before the Metropolitan magistrate assigned to the task by Mrs Jafri and her lawyers.
The law works slowly, but the noose it weaves is unbreakable.
The BJP would have been better off had it heeded these words - "No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main. If a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less, as well as if a promontory were, as well as if a manor of thy friend's or of thine own were: any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind, and therefore never send to know for whom the bells tolls; it tolls for thee" – John Donne, (1572-1631)
