As some people who are following the earth-shaking news may be aware, the brave Delhi Police has finally reclaimed that stretch of road on Nyaya Marg which was between Panchsheel Marg on one side, Cross Road No. 2 aka Andre Malraux Marg on the other, and lying between the American Embassy on one side and the American School's Open Hand Cafe' on the other, after decades of stand-offs that make Delhi the city it is - a paradise of illegal double and triple parking. Ordinary native Indians of the non-red and some red variety were like totally banned from this valuable piece of real estate, friends out on cycling or jogging expeditions were told to go stuff the hamburger into their hats or helmets by the security guards, and the only people allowed into the wigwams by paleface were those who were not good enough to go into the circle of wagons but had to hang around outside.

Means, the road had become a huge parking lot for non Americans, and the takeover was complete. "I like the smell of visa forms in the morning", is what one senior consular type person is reported to have said loudly, wearing a huge hat and no shirt while listening to a song about Valkyries. Sadly, there was no beach nearby, but the Swiss and French Embassies would have to do.

By evening, after a few of the bravest had ventured onto this reclaimed road, our very own auto-rickshaw drivers who will go where nobody else will dare tread, other citizens decided to see what had happened to their road. Shrieks of joy and glee as they realised that, hey, the pavements were still as uneven as before, brought larger numbers of people out, including Pakistanis from the Pakistani High Commission across the road. The Pakistanis were trying their best to look like Indians but had failed miserably because they were the only men there looking like Royal Stags. Total give-away, that, the Indians were more into being like Old Monks.

Suggestions on how to ensure India and Indians retained this road were flowing in fast and furious. Organic food farmer's market, said one. Special route for DTC bus 615, to JNU, said another. Force the embassy people to drink only Indian beer, was another one. Old SardarJi of india gate ice-cream stalls were already coming up, as were the acrobats and jugglers, and in the distance, the elephant and camel ride guys could be heard.

In a corner, some other Indians were listening and dancing to Brule'. As you may know, that is the most famous Indian music and song group in the USA.

Yes, we like Americans, but we want our roads back, too. Please do not try to take it back, otherwise we will re-name the circle near your Embassy. Would "Fidel Castro Circle", sound good, as an address, then?
