Freedom to preach

Being creative isn't easy. There is always some buzz-kill floating around telling us we shouldn't say certain things, paint certain things, write certain things and in the case of Yo Yo Honey Singh, sing certain things.

A few weeks ago TOI carried an interview with a singer by the name of Jasbir Jassi in which he let us know that he had written to the Chief Justice of India and the I&B minister asking them to stop the usage of what he considered 'indecent' lyrics and he went on to cite my man Yo Yo as an example of an artist putting out 'vulgar' songs.

Now, it would have been OK if Jassi had his chaddis in a knot for his own personal reasons, but, like the pesky moral police everywhere, he had to go and take offense on behalf of half the country's population by imploring the National Commission of Women to join him on the offensive because in his opinion it is women and children who will suffer the most at the hands of a song about someone who wants char bottle vodka. As if this weren't enough, he further buffers his whinge by claiming that Honey Singh, and artists like him, are giving Punjab a bad name!

Jassi O Jassi, you are upsetting me on so many different levels it's hard for me to concentrate on my new favourite Honey Singh number Sunny Sunny.
First of all Punjab's reputation for crude, yet comic relief is as old as the hills and many a proud Punjabi would be loathe to hand over all the credit to a millennial rapper. Apart from ma ki daal, the men and women of Punjab have given us some of the most creative and entertaining ways with which to insult a person and it is this irreverence we love most; please do your people a favour and leave them and their wonderful sense of humour out of this.

Next up, would you please refrain from horning in on women's safety as a hook for your argument. I have said this before and i will say this again, do-gooders everywhere please get a little more creative with your excuses for not having anything better to do and stay away from using women to promote your narrow-minded views. Instead of writing to the I&B ministry why don't you start writing letters to law enforcement insisting that there be adequate security in place so that the women you seem so concerned about don't get raped when we take a bus, take a photograph, or hell, take a shot of vodka in a nightclub.

Last but not least, let's talk for a minute about freedom of speech. It's one thing for some busybody aunty disguised as a concerned citizen, or a fading politician/religious fundamentalist trying to grab the spotlight to pull a stunt like this, but a fellow artist? Look Jassi, as a comedian i depend on people like you to preserve and protect my freedom of speech not condemn it. You are free to make your clean, saaf-sutra ganaas (his words not mine) , and no offense here but if i find that they are not up to my standards i can just change the channel every time you come on the radio. There is no need for me to start writing letters asking for them to be banned or to be aired on a special channel for clean music. For you to go out there and stick a knife in the back of your fellow musicians is in very poor taste. And in some circles my good man this type of behaviour is considered vulgar.

And now I must go because aaj blue hai paani, aur din bhi sunny sunny.
